Practical Experience

Ian is a mechanical engineer and qualified loss adjuster with over 15 years risk management and claims experience in handling technical engineering and property risks.

Ian worked for Belfor-Relectronic for 9 years, dealing with damage management, loss recovery and risk surveys. Initially based in the UK and covering Europe and USA, he subsequently relocated to Asia as Regional Managing Director, responsible for North East Asia including China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau and Korea where he handled a wide range of large industrial losses. He has particular experience in managing recovery and reinstatement projects, predominantly involving time critical industrial and construction losses.

Ian subsequently established his own loss and risk consultancy business before joining Crawford & Company as Director, Technical Services - Asia. His responsibilities included providing engineering support on large and complex industrial and construction losses, handling regional major losses and risk management services.

Risk Management - Ian has extensive risk and loss advisory experience including front and back end semiconductor, power generation, telecommunications, manufacturing and catering facilities, large property construction projects including an international exhibition centre in addition to preshipment and packaging suitability surveys.

Material Damage - Ian's extensive technical engineering knowledge has been the foundation for dealing with complex engineering related losses including causation analysis, detailed technical assessment of the nature and extent of damage, reinstatement options, loss mitigation and recovery management advice, engineering assistance to the Insured in addition to causation analysis/investigation and reverse engineering.

Responsibilities involved all aspects of the claim management process, including gathering and reviewing technical and financial information,liaising with site personnel, engineers and other specialists as well as preparing and presenting written and verbal reports to lawyers and Underwriters.

Major Global Loss and Catastrophe Handling - Ian has been responsible for managing, handling and supporting major losses throughout the world in addition to the management of catastrophe response teams within Asia, UK, Europe and the US. This has enabled him to develop invaluable skills in dealing with a wide range of nationalities and geographic practices at all levels.

Sample Claims Experience - Given Ian's broad engineering background, he has been involved in a multitude of high profile, time critical, engineering, property and construction losses including:

  • Power: Inherent Defect Turbine Failure
    Combined cycle turbine failure: damage assessment, causation and inherent defect investigation, technical engineering assistance and advice to Insured resulting in OEM accepting responsibility of PD and interruption losses.
  • Construction: Olefin Plant Fire Loss
    Fire loss within main sub-station of USD 1.25B Olefin plant: contamination and damage assessment, causation review, reinstatement options advice and review, recovery management assistance, supplier negotiation, loss involving PD and potential DSU. 
  • Construction: Airport Catering Facility Fire Loss
    Extensive damage to entire facility (structure, equipment and M&E) resulting in a claim submission of > USD 50M: contamination and damage assessment, causation review, reinstatement options advice and review, recovery management, supplier negotiation, policy cost allocation (CAR + IAR), settlement negotiation.
  • Manufacturing: Fire and Hydrofluoric Acid Leakage
    Extensive damage to adjoining facilities (structure, equipment and M&E) resulting in a claim submission of > USD 60M. Damage assessment, reinstatement options advice and review, recovery management, supplier negotiation, loss involving PD and interruption cover.
  • Textiles: Fire Loss at Manufacturing Facility
    Extensive damage resulting in a claim submission of > USD 60M. Damage assessment, reinstatement options advice and review, recovery management, supplier negotiation, loss involving PD and interruption cover.
